No Hot Water?

Find out why you have no hot water in your home

Modern society takes hot water for granted. That's why, when we open the faucet and there's no hot water, it can be truly inconvenient. Most often, when you have no hot water, the problem is caused by a problem on the water heater.

No Hot Water Causes: Electric Water Heaters

Some of the most common issues that can lead to no hot water, include:

Tripped Circuit Breaker:  The first thing to do when you have no hot water, is to check the circuit breaker box. It is possible that the water heater's circuit breaker has tripped.

Heating Element Issue:  A failed heating element is one of the most common issues that occur with electric water heaters. It's a quick and easy repair, but it should be performed by a licensed plumber.

Thermostat Fault:  When your no hot water problem is caused by a fault on the thermostat, it will require a thermostat replacement. The lower thermostat only controls the lower element, while the upper thermostat controls both the lower and upper elements. If your water is warm, but not hot, that is an indication of a failed thermostat.

No Hot Water Causes: Gas Water Heaters

If you have no hot water coming from your gas water heater, it could be due to:

Pilot Light:  If your pilot light is unlit, check the following:

  • air in the gas line
  • defective, bent, or clogged supply line
  • defective control valve
  • clogged or dirty burner
  • thermocouple
  • ventilation

No Gas Supply: It is possible that the gas supply has been inadvertently interrupted. Check whether the valve is on.
