Don't let Frozen Water Pipes Ruin your Holidays!
TEMPERATURES ARE DROPPING!
IF YOU ARE GOING AWAY THIS HOLIDAY.
KEEP HEATING UP. OPEN CUPBOARDS.
Beware of an unexpected cold snap or deep freezes. Frozen pipes may occur during these very extreme cold weather conditions.
If the pipe bursts, it could cause substantial damage to your home.
Some Possible Risky Pipe Locations:
- · In an outside wall.
- · Under a sink on an outside wall.
- · In an unheated crawl space.
Here are some suggested measures to take to try to avoid issues of frozen pipes during extremely cold weather.
- Allowing a small trickle of hot and cold water from your faucets to keep pipes from freezing. The cost of water is a small price to pay to avoid possible frozen & burst pipes during these very extremely cold temperatures. (and/or)
- Shut the water off at the main water shut off near the meter and open up the faucets in the basement first and then open all the other faucets /taps (bathroom sink, bath, and shower) in the house to drain the entire plumbing system (if you have an independent water heater and you have drained all the plumbing lines, it is suggested to turn the power off to the water heater to avoid damage to it).
- Crank up the heat in the house. Incandescent lighting also helps heat the house. A space heater or blow dryer strategically placed and supervised can help the thawing process along. If you have not drained the system and turned the water off at the main, be prepared to run to the main water shut-off and turn off the water if you notice that the pipe has burst once it thaws.
- HOWEVER BE AWARE THAT IF YOU ARE ON A COMBI SYSTEM, (WHERE THE WATER HEATER IS THE SOURCE OF HEAT FOR THE CENTRAL HEATING SYSTEM), IF YOU SHUT OFF THE WATER AT THE MAIN YOU WILL LOSE THE CENTRAL HEAT IN YOUR HOUSE.
- Advise the office or technician when calling in if you have PVC piping because the thawing machine does not work on it.
The success of this is not guaranteed but it helps. Call a professional plumber to take care of the situation (Hoerner Heating & Plumbing - 416 463 2573).
