Sump Pump Replacement

Sump Pump Replacement & Rebates in Toronto

Do you need a sump pump replacement? Sump pumps are your go-to solution for protecting your basement from flooding in heavy rains. Basically, a sump pump safeguards your home from flooded basements, massive water damage, and costly water damage repairs.

Since your sump pump only runs when necessary, and it may not run for weeks at a time, you might not notice when it is worn out permanently. Here are some simple signs you can look for to prevent pump failure and to avoid waking up to a flooded basement.

How long will a sump pump last?

No matter how good the sump pump is, it needs to be replaced every 7-10 years. Sump pumps divert rainwater away from the house and collect it in the basement. How often you use your sump pump, how much water it has to move, and how long it runs can all affect how long it will last.

It’s best to get a professional plumber to inspect and clean your sump pump if you don’t know how old it is. You should schedule this in early fall or late winter. Your sump pump works hard during spring rains, and it’s cheaper to replace a sump pump than repair damage from a flood. Hoerner can do sump pump repair for you also if you just need a repair.

Signs you need a new sump pump

Most people don’t think about sump pumps until they’re in need. And they are notorious for breaking down at the worst time. The following signs may indicate that your sump pump is on its last legs.

Our favorite sump pumps: The PC sump pump series is a fully assembled sump pump kit system. The model pc237 441 with battery backup pump is frequently installed by us. It can also be used with a variety of other sump pumps.

A frequent on/off cycle

Sump pumps that constantly cycle on and off may not have large enough basins to handle the volume of water in your basement. Overworking the sump pump could destroy its motor, so invest in a deeper basin that ensures it only runs when needed. There’s a better way to install a sump pump basin than the five-gallon type. You’ll have to dig a bigger hole in your basement floor to put in a bigger basin, but you’ll save a lot of money compared to replacing your sump pump every few years.

Continuously running

Sump pumps that run for long periods of time may be underpowered for the volume of water they handle or for the distance they must transport. This makes them run constantly. A sump pump is sized based on the amount of water it can pump. Consider upgrading to a larger model with a more efficient GPH to avoid breakdowns. A plumber will be able to tell you how much water your sump pump can handle.

Unusual noises

Sump pumps should not be noisy. You may be hearing more than a low hum during the operation of your sump pump, so check it out for potential failure. These strange sounds may be caused by a variety of issues, from a failed bearing to a jammed impeller. A sump pump with abnormal noises is likely to have worn or broken parts. You can ask the plumber if you need a quick fix or if it’s time for a total replacement.

Don’t come on when it should

Sump pumps aren’t just working when there’s a heavy rainstorm. They also work when water seeps into your basement from melting snow, ground pressure, or leaking pipes. Despite their inability to stop water from entering your home, sump pumps are your best friend when it comes to getting rid of that accumulated water in your basement. Therefore, if you notice more water puddles or pools on your basement floor, your sump pump is not working right. You need a working sump pump in your basement to avoid water damage. Your plumber can tell you whether or not to fix it or replace it.

Sump pumps: Do They Need a Battery Backup?

If you have a bad thunderstorm, your sump can still function properly, but the electricity could be knocked out; you would be left without the sump. For a few hours during a power outage, you can run your sump pump on a rechargeable battery pack if you are not quite ready to invest in a generator. A battery backup system is built into many newer models of sump pumps. In case your main sump pump breaks down or needs help, you may also want to buy a second battery-powered sump pump.
