holiday drain clogDuring the holiday season, most of us give up the old diet for a few weeks and indulge in artery-clogging meals, such as butter-basted turkey dinners to hams, bacon and roasts, and more. However, just as FOGs (fats, oils and grease) clog up our arteries, so can they clog up our homes' plumbing systems when harried cooks allow them to enter the drains.  Add to it food scraps, and you may well end up with a stubborn clog that requires professional plumbing help.

Here at Hoerner, the holidays are our busiest times, as plumbing systems are under more strain than usual, and clogged drains are the most common reason why we are called out. People tend to use too little water to flush their garbage disposal units, and then FOGs are added to the mix, causing a messy sludge.

When grease congeals, it becomes hard like candle wax, and leftover pumpkin pulp becomes a hard, stringy, epoxy-like substance.

Homes that are packed with guests place strain on the plumbing system, with people flushing cotton balls, disposable wipes and even hair down the toilets. Hair and skin oils also make it into the shower drains, from where it is washed into the City's sewer system.

FOGs in drains and sewers can cause backups and even basement floods, so it is important to avoid it at all costs.

Here's how you can keep FOGs and other problem-causing particles out of your sewer system:

- Use paper towels to clean up grease and oil, and discard them into the rubbish bin, rather than into the toilet or garbage disposal.

- Don't put bones or stringy fruit or vegetable waste down the garbage disposal.

- Run water for ten seconds before and another ten seconds after you hear the grinding stop.

- When you have many house guests, leave 10 minutes between each shower to allow slow drains to clear.

- Never flush paper towels, cotton swabs or baby wipes down the toilet.

-  Take care of minor plumbing issues before the holiday season to avoid plumbing emergencies while you have guests.

Restaurants and other food services companies also tend to wash FOGs down the drains, and regular drain maintenance is important. It is recommended that they install grease interceptors to any piping systems that connect to sewers.
