Does Your Furnace Need Repair?
Wondering if your furnace needs a repair? Here are a few signs to look out for:
- Inconsistent heating: If some rooms are warmer than others, or if your furnace runs constantly and never gets to the temperature you’ve set, there could be an issue with your vent airflow or the thermostat itself.
- Unusual noises: Hear banging, rattling, or squealing? These could be loose belts, worn-out bearings, or cracks in the heat exchanger.
- Spike in your energy bill: Your furnace could be working overtime and struggling to keep up because of some internal issue.
- Weird smells: Your furnace may have a clogged filter or an issue with the combustion process.
- Short cycling (frequent on/off cycles): Furnace short cycling is when your furnace turns on and off constantly, without fully heating your home. This can happen when your furnace overheats, the thermostat isn’t working right, or the air filter is clogged.
Have you checked your thermostat? Make sure it’s on and set to the right temperature. A quick adjustment or battery replacement may fix the problem.
Is your filter dirty? A clogged furnace filter restricts airflow, causing your furnace to work harder and potentially overheat.

Common Furnace FAQs
Why Is My Furnace Blowing Cold Air?
Leaving your thermostat set to “on” instead of “auto” can cause the fan to blow air even when the furnace isn’t heating it. A clogged air filter can restrict airflow, which can cause the furnace to overheat and shut off the burner, which will also leave you with cold air blowing from vents. Issues with a malfunctioning pilot light or ignition system can sometimes stop a furnace from heating air. And in some cases, a gas supply that isn’t working or a broken heating element can also be the cause.
Why Is My Furnace Leaking Water?
This is usually caused by condensation. High-efficiency furnaces produce condensation which drains through a condensate line. If this line gets clogged, water can back up and leak around the furnace. It could also be a broken or blocked condensate pump, which moves water out of the furnace. In standard-efficiency furnaces, leaks can happen when there’s an issue with the humidifier connected to the furnace.
Why Does My Furnace Keep Shutting Off?
A clogged air filter is usually the reason. When the filter is dirty, it restricts airflow, causing the furnace to overheat and shut down as a safety measure. Other possible causes can be a malfunctioning thermostat telling the furnace to turn off if it’s misreading the room temperature. And faulty flame sensors or dirty burners can also cause your gas furnace to shut off.
How Often Should I Clean My Furnace?
We recommend that you have your gas furnace cleaned annually to prevent breakdowns. An annual cleaning will improve your furnace’s performance, lower your energy bills, and help your furnace last for years.
