Heavy Rain and Snowfall: Are You Prepared?

Sump Pumps, Sewage Ejectors, Drain Digs & Backup Camera Inspections – to the Toronto Basement Fooding Rescue…

heavy rain Toronto basement floodingThe January maximum rainfall record was recently broken and it led to some flooding in parts of the city. If you live at the bottom of a hill, you might well be at risk for basement flooding. Are you prepared, or are you at risk for basement flooding?

Home heating TipsDid you know that heating your home accounts for approximately 60% of your energy bill*? It’s a good idea to ensure your home heating is as efficient as possible.

Is your Radiator Leaking?

Radiator LeakingIf you notice water on the floors near your central heating system, that’s a sure sign that your radiator is leaking. Do not ignore this! Leaks tend to become bigger, causing more leakage and water damage.

One of the biggest issues with standing water is that it can lead to mold and mildew within just a few hours. Another major issue is flooding, which poses risks to your belongings and your property.

Shut down the radiator valves right away.

winter home protection tipsNew home owners tend to think of their homes as four walls and a roof, but without the necessary care and attention, your home can deteriorate quickly. By taking care of the small issues right away, you can prevent them from becoming major (and costly) issues down the line. A good time to think about protecting your home for the winter, is during fall.

Use these tips to winterize your home ahead of the frigid weather.

Check your HVAC system

During fall, look at the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. Most HVAC manufacturers recommend changing the filters at least once a year. However, an annual maintenance agreement might be the way to go.

Check your drainage and gutters

Sometimes, the sound around the home’s foundation settles and creates areas where water pools. Check for any low spots and fill it with soil. Another issue with drainage is gutters. Check all the downspouts to make sure they are clear of leaves and that the downspouts are diverted away from the home. You may need to use downspout extenders. When saturated soil near the foundation freezes and thaws throughout the winter months, it can cause all kinds of issues.

Prevent frozen pipes

Frozen pipes during the winter months is one of the leading causes of house fires, as people tend to use risky methods to thaw the pipes. That’s never a good idea. It’s better to winterize your home ahead of the cold months to prevent frozen pipes with proper insulation, using non-toxic antifreeze, and opening cabinet doors. If you will be traveling during winter, be sure to ask someone to check in daily. Avoid setting the thermostat lower than 17 degrees Celsius, and remember to drain outside water lines. Use the main water shut off and drain all the water lines inside the home as well.

Prevent water damage

Extreme weather can wreak havoc on aging plumbing. Be sure to hire a plumber to install a backwater valve to prevent sewer backups. A sump pump can make a big difference, provided it is regularly maintained. And you may be eligible for a sump pump rebate too! While an electric pump is convenient, it will not help in the event of a power outage. Braided wire mesh hoses can help prevent leakages from water using appliances.

We’d like to urge you to please be cautious when dealing with home water damage or electrical issues. It should ideally be left to a professional tradesperson.

Drain Backup

When your sewer line fails, it can cause quite a lot of hassle including a main drain backup. Apart from the smell that usually accompanies a failed sewer line, there’s the fact that it causes inconvenience of massive proportions: all waste-water operations must stop right away to avoid further damage, including the use of bathtubs, sinks, toilets and showers.
